Take a walk through Buxton Country Park and youāll eventually find yourself at Solomonās Temple, a Victorian tower built in 1896, situated on top of a neolithic burial mound. You can also explore inside of this tower, taking advantage of the most beautiful views across Buxton.
Just a short walk from here is Pooleās Cavern (officially listed as one of the “Seven Wonders of the Peaks”), an impressive limestone cave thatās existed for over 2 million years! Guided tours are well worth it if youāre ticking off historical things to do in Buxton and want to learn about its geology and local legends.

Step into a living fairytale… Starting from Millers Dale car park, this circular walk takes you along the Monsal Trail into a gorge surrounded by lush greenery and limestone cliffs. You can also explore disused railway tunnels and a former lime kiln, Old East Buxton Lime Kilns, which closed in 1944 and is now home to local wildlife!

WHY VISIT?
Monsal Dale’s viaduct and weir sit in the heart of the valley. You can walk or cycle across it via the Monsal Trail, a flat and scenic path that runs along an old railway line.
The standout landmark is the Monsalhead Viaduct, a huge 19th-century railway bridge that cuts across the valley. You can walk across it now and get great views down into the valley. Below the viaduct is Monsal Weir, a beautiful waterfall on the River Wye. The whole area is great for casual exploring, ideal if you’re looking for relaxed things to do in Buxton that still deliver great views.
Up above the valley, Monsal Head offers one of the best views in the Peaks. Itās also where youāll find the Monsal Head Hotel and Bar… perfect for a post-walk pint or classic pub grub with spectacular views. To work up a sweat, you can walk up a long set of steps from Monsal Weir. If you require easier access though, thereās parking nearby.
#4 – ERRWOOD RESERVOIR, UPPER GOYT VALLEY & RUINS

WHY VISIT?
An underrated hidden gem in the Peak District that gives you lakeside views, woodland trails, beautiful moorland and the ruins of Errwood Hall. You also have the option of a short walk or a long hike, depending on how adventurous youāre feeling at the time!
Circular Walk – Park at Errwood Hall Parking for an easy circular walk around the reservoir. Along the way, you’ll stumble across the ruin of Errwood Hall, a Victorian mansion that was originally built in 1843 by the Grimshawe family, as well as St. Josephine’s shrine for Miss Dolores de Ybarguen, who served as a governess and companion to the family. Walking in the direction of Goyt Valley on the other side of the reservoir, you’ll find another shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary. To extend this walk, head to Upper Goyt Valley.
Hikes – If you’re looking for a more challenging walk or a hike with rewarding views, there are plenty of peaks within this area. These include Shining Tor, Pym Chair and Cats Tor.
#5 – THREE SHIRES HEAD TRAIL

WHY VISIT?
Three Shires Head is the point where Derbyshire, Cheshire, and Staffordshire all meet, and it’s one of the best things to do in Buxton if youāre after natural waterfalls and wild swimming. It’s marked by an old stone packhorse bridge and a series of small waterfalls along the River Dane.
This walking trial takes around 2 hours to complete. Starting from Gradbach, the route takes you through open moorland, quiet trails, and bits of woodland. It’s not too challenging, but it does involve uneven ground and some slippery rocks, so walking or hiking boots are a good idea.
About half way through the walk you’ll get to a small bridge where you’ll find a shallow pool and waterfalls. It’s perfect for a quick dip in such a peaceful spot!
